Adaptability is the key to surviving in today’s business world. For the small operator the risk of some multinational opening up down the road and wiping you out is always there. To prevent your company going down the toilet you’ve got to prepare to use your imagination and explore new ideas.

I’m always fascinated by people who come up with some seemingly crazy idea and make it work. When I lived in Toronto many years ago a small store found a way to compete with all the large groceries stores that surrounded it. The owner studied what four items where purchased by the majority of his customers. It turned out to be bread, bananas, sugar and milk, he then cut these items to below cost and plastered the fact all over his window. He was obviously counting on people buying other items while they were in the store. It was an enormous risk but it paid off and he not only survived but ended up becoming a supermarket himself.

In sales we hear a lot about closing techniques but I’m not sure anyone can claim to have a universal answer. After all if you’re selling pencils door to door it’s a lot different to selling an integrated computer system to a multi-national corporation.
